Limkokwing International Debating Championship

The Limkokwing International Debating Championship is a platform to enable young and talented individuals to reach their full potential.

The Championship is one of the means that Limkokwing University provides for students to build up their base of skills. The platform also helps in identifying talents and to provide the avenue for these students to raise their skills to global standards.

The Championship has been designed to primarily benefit students who are in the later stage of their secondary education and are actively concerned with their career options as well as future education prospects.

Limkokwing University welcomed delegates from the Central China Normal University to discuss collaboration opportunities on 8 Dec.

The delegates University included Dean/ Professor and Doctoral Advisor Xiao Geng Xu, PhD; Deputy Director Zhang Shuu, International Students’ Affairs Office Deputy Director/College of International Cultural Exchange Deputy Dean Zhou Bo and College of International Cultural Exchange Admission Office Fang Rui.

The discussion between the delegates and Limkokwing University representatives focused on establishing an internship/summer camp programme, conducting academic exchange and a Masters of Art / Post Graduate Studies programme.

The Central China Normal University was established in 1903 and is one of the three top normal universities in Mainland China. The University engages in a wide range of international academic exchange and maintains academic links with more than 20 universities, colleges and research institutes in America, Germany, Russia, Ukraine France, Italy, Britain, Japan, Switzerland, Bulgaria and Brazil.

The university comprises of 25 schools and departments with more than 60 research centres. It was one of the first university in China to enrol students overseas and has a graduate employment rate of 95% since 2001.

Malaysia Social Media Week 2016 at Limkokwing University

Limkokwing University hosted the Fourth Malaysia Social Media Week Summit (MSMW 2016) from 7 until 11 Mar at the University’s Cyberjaya campus.

The summit was organised by Malaysia Social Media Chambers (SMC) and endorsed by the Malaysian Communication and Multimedia Commission (MCMC).

SMC is non-profit organisation dedicated to advocating and advancing the discipline of credible social media. Through best practises, industry education and member value, SMC advocates social media as a channel of solution to business challenges and a key component in the creation of brands ethically.

Themed “Engage, Educate, Entertain”, MSMW 2016 attracted social media professionals including executives, entrepreneurs, journalists, bloggers, brand managers, social media strategists, students, artists, activists and technology/media specialist to share their experiences.

Malaysia’s Urban Wellbeing, Housing & Local Government Minister, His Excellency Datuk Hj Abdul Rahman bin HJ Dahlan participated in this year’s summit to discuss the role of social media in global development.

He emphasised the importance of reaching the right target audience via social media platforms. According to him, social media provide easier communication with the public.

“When a crisis appears, you have to resolve it as soon as possible,” he said during the panel discussion. “You can communicate to everyone via Twitter and Facebook to cover all bases.”

Shane Dallas, Founder of The Travel Camel, added that the summit enable other participants to learn current trends and tools to become more effective with social media practises.

“MSMW 2016 is a great event to attend because you meet people from around the world including experts in social media,” he said. “Limkokwing University is a perfect vehicle for people to learn about social media.”

According to Asha Phillips, Accounts Director of CrowdTangle, the summit enabled social media practitioners to learn social media technology developments while following latest trends and happenings as well as networking opportunities.

“It is great to get different perspectives and different examples in one place,” she said. “Conferences like social media week are important because participants can learn from each other.”

She also added that social media environment presents new challenges whereby universities are becoming increasingly important for future graduates.

“Students would need to learn to use these new technologies because it would affect them in the industry they work in.”

Nowruz New Year Celebration at Limkokwing University

Students from over 150 nations celebrated Nowruz on 22 March at the Limkokwing University campus in Cyberjaya.

Nowruz is the Central Asian and Persian New Year that has been celebrated by diverse ethnic and religious communities for thousands of years. Celebrating Nowruz also marks the start of the Persian calendar and is a holy day for Zoroastrianism (Mazdayasna).

The celebration originated from Ancient Persia from one of the capitals of the Achaemenid Empire in Persis (Fars) in Iran. It is also celebrated in Azerbaijan, the North Caucasus, Kurdish regions of eastern Turkey and Northern Iraq to mention a few.

Organised by the Limkokwing Nomad Club’s Kazakhstani Society, the celebration was attended by delegates from the Embassy of Kazakhstan: Representative of Education Kazakhstan Ilyasova Umit, Consul Almas Aubakirov, Assistant Consul Almat Zharylkasynov, Assistant Consul Kazybek Zhuman and Assistant Consul Dinmukhamed Sembayev.

The celebration helped to promote cultural understanding among the University’s diverse community. Students played traditional games such as ‘Assyk’ and competed against each other in Arm-Wresting and Tug-of-War. The celebration also featured a flash-mob, cultural dance, traditional songs and a fashion show with costumes that reflects national identity. Visitors were able to enjoy Iranian, Kyrgyzstani and Tajikistani cuisine. 

“The multicultural environment enables us to learn new things from each other,” said 20 year old Kazakhstan student Nuriyen Azamat who is pursuing Bachelor of Arts (Hons) in Games Art Development. “It really makes me happy to see everyone learning about each other’s tradition.”

For Iranian student, Nasim Molany, who is studying Architecture, the celebration made her appreciate cultural diversity more.

“We learn to respect each other more and work better because we understand each other’s difference,” she said. “If I am going to work in different countries, it will be easier for me because I am familiar with their culture.”

Limkokwing University incorporates cultural diversity as part of its educational experience. Students learn to communicate globally while fostering cultural awareness among future graduates.

Limkokwing International Debating Championship 2016

Limkokwing University hosted the second International Debating Championship, a three-day debate competition whereby over 200 students in 68 teams competed against each other from 25 to 27 Mac.

The event was officiated by Senior Assistant Director Tuan Haji Mohd Anuar bin Abdul Hamid, a representative from the Ministry of Education. Organised by Limkokwing University, it was supported and endorsed by the Ministry of Education Malaysia, Ministry of Higher Education Malaysia and Malaysian Institute for Debate and Public Speaking.

The Limkokwing International Debate Championship provides a platform for aspiring youths to hone their skills for strategic thinking and public speaking.

This competition emphasised soft skill development through a series of debates and creative seminars. It also enables students to develop persuasive skills and innovative reasoning while harnessing their creative potential.

This year’s Debate Championship covered various topics encompassing ethics, morality and law. Debate topics motioned include ‘Should music containing lyrics that glorify violence be banned?’ and ‘Should a technological advanced individual share their knowledge with a corrupt police force to combat crime.”

“Limkokwing University inspires us to use our creativity and to think out of the box,” said Amir Aniq bin Abdul Haziz from the Malay College Kuala Kangsar after his team won Runner-up position. “There were a lot of competitors here and this challenge was great for us.”

Kishen Sivabalan, a member for the Debate Team Champion from SMK Sri Permata said the exposure provided him with the chance to develop his ability to present his ideas while exposing him to new challenges.

“We have been training for a long time to win this debate competition,” he said. “This competition enabled us to improve our soft skills and artistic talents.”

He also mentioned that Limkokwing University exposed them to a holistic learning experience which appeals to both scientific and artistic individuals.

After completing the event, award recipients received full tuition fees from the Mahasiswa Scholarship Fund from Limkokwing University to further their studies.

His Royal Highness Sultan Pahang, Sultan Haji Ahmad Shah Al-Musta’in Billah Ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Abu Bakar Ri’Ayatuddin Al-Mu’Adzam Shah DKP has established the Mahasiswa Sultan Ahmad Shah Scholarship programme in January. The scholarship programme was created to enable young Malaysians to further their studies with scholarship opportunities worth RM10 million.

Limkokwing University emphasises the importance of creativity to groom future leaders. Students learn to harness their creative skills to apply effective techniques and solve complex problems.

Students celebrate African culture & diversity at Limkokwing University

Limkokwing University began its series of annual cultural showcases with ‘Afrosphere’; a showcase of African Heritage and diversity at the Hall of Fame on 1 April.

Afrosphere featured a mesh of lively and creative activities such as poetry, songs, dance and a fashion show exhibiting an array of traditional attires from seven African nations namely; Congo, Namibia, Mozambique, Zambia, Sudan, Swaziland, Nigeria and Tanzania.

The event attracted a culturally diverse crowd of over 300 students from Limkokwing and other universities. It was aimed at sharing African cultural diversity and serves as a platform to produce socially conscious graduates.

His Royal Highness Prince Sicalo and Prince Mavela of Swaziland also graced the event with their presence accompanied by Acting High Commissioner/Chancellor of Swaziland, Honourable Sibusisiwe and Members of the Swaziland Royal Court.

Nigerian Student Association President, Collins Masanto Adigwe studying Bachelor of Science (Hons) in Information Technology expressed his delight at having an opportunity to attend Afrosphere.

“Today is magnificent; I must give kudos to the University for being able to put together such a colourful and meaningful event. When people come together at such events, there is harmony, synergy and unity,” he said.
Lebanese student, Iskandar, acknowledged that learning about other cultures is helpful for future graduates because they would know how to work with people from different backgrounds.

“In the future, one may have to work with people from different cultures, so being used to interacting with different kinds of people would help students have a better working environment,” he concluded.

Afrosphere is the first series of cultural events that build up to the annual Cultural Festival where students from over 150 nations get to showcase their traditions and cultural heritage.

Palestinian students commemorate 40th Land Day at Limkokwing University

Over 300 students from Palestine celebrated ‘Palestinian Land Day’ at Limkokwing University’s flagship campus in Cyberjaya on 6 April. The celebration featured national songs, poetry, Palestinian cultural dances and a photo exhibit.

30 March 2016 marks the 40th anniversary of the mass upsurge inside Occupied Palestine ’48 on 30 March 1976, in response to an Israeli state attempt to confiscate over 4000 acres of land from Palestinians in the Galilee.

The day commemorates the lives of six Palestinians gunned down by the Israeli forces during the general strike and protests after the Israeli government announced plans to expropriate more land for Jewish-only settlements.

Present at the event were; the Ambassador of Palestine to Malaysia, His Excellency Dr. Anwar Al Agha; Diplomatic attaché of Qatar Embassy, Mr. Mubarak Abdulhamed Mubark Alkubaisi; Economic attaché of Algeria Embassy, Mr. Kamel Souici; Second Secretary Iraq Embassy, Mr. Hassan Alhaidari; Cultural Attache of Yemen Embassy, Mr. Rushdi Saeed Al Koshab; Minister Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Sudan, Mr. Muawia Eltoum Elamin ElBukhari; Limkokwing University Vice President of Special Event Dato’ Fajura Juffa Mohd Mustafa Kamal; staff and students.

Khalid Mohamed Aburadi, studying Bachelor of Business in Entrepreneurship was grateful to be able to celebrate Palestinian Land Day even though he was far away from home.

“It feels great to honour this day on campus surrounded by our brothers and sisters and our embassy’s delegation especially when we are on the other side of the world. I am so proud of being Palestinian studying in Limkokwing University,” he said.

Speaking on behalf of the Founder and President of Limkokwing University Tan Sri Dato’ Sri Dr. Lim Kok Wing, Dato’ Fajura Juffa congratulated the Palestinian Club President and students for organising the event.

“We’d like to thank the Palestinian community of this campus for putting together this activity for all of us to internalise and learn from. Your continuous efforts and urge to educate anyone is for everyone to emulate,” she said.

His Excellency Dr. Anwar Al Agha expressed his gratitude for the support Limkokwing University has shown towards Palestinian students.

“We are very happy to see our brothers and sisters from the state of Palestine, from the Arab countries and from all the nations here at Limkokwing University who are really supporting us at this moment as we are commemorating the 40th anniversary of the Palestinian Land Day,” he said.

In 2004 Limkokwing University launched the for ‘Plight of the Palestinians; A Nation Denied A Homeland’ campaign video which aired over television to convey the magnitude of the suffering endured by the people of Palestine.

In conclusion to his speech, His Excellency Dr. Anwar Al Agha said, “We hope Limkokwing University will always give us the chance to help Palestinian students and we give special thanks to Tan Sri Dato’ Sri Dr. Lim Kok Wing for his keenness in helping the Palestinian people.”

Monophone returns to Limkokwing University

Monophone’s ‘High School Memories’ made its return on April 16 at the University’s Hall of Fame. Organised by the Merah Putih Club (MPC), Monophone 2016 featured ‘Changcutters’ as well as Indonesian cultural performances such as ‘Saman’ and ‘Kuda Lumping’.

The Changcutters are a rock-and-roll band from Bandung, Indonesia that has released four albums and received the 2009 AMI Award for Best Newcomers. Their musical style is a mix of rock, funk, punk revival, indie pop, jazz and blues.

Limkokwing University’s traditional dance team ‘Saman’, known for blending culture and advanced dance skills, made their return for Monophone 2016. The dance team is widely known throughout Malaysia and have been invited to perform at various Indonesian community events.

Monophone 2016 also introduced Kuda Lumping, a traditional and exotic dance originating from Java to students at the University. The performance depicts a group of horsemen riding colourfully decorated bamboo horses.

“Monophone is an annual cultural night of Merah Putih,” said Orista Primadewa, former MPC President. “We are delighted to introduce our culture to other students and strengthen friendships between different countries.”

Other highlights for Monophone 2016 included a fashion show, art exhibition and the inauguration of Merah Putih Club’s new President.

“The event shows what Indonesian music is like to students from other cultures,” said Fikri Muhammad Rahim, MPC’s newly elected as President. 

“There are things that you cannot learn in classes,” he said. “The University provides students with the opportunity to communicate across different cultures.” 

Limkokwing University offers students with the opportunity to experience diversity from 150 different countries. Students learn to develop networking skills with various nationalities to pursue a globalised career.

KIGS students complete Global University Campus programme

Kolej International Graduate Studies (KIGS) students from Brunei recently completed their Global University Campus programme, an intensive enhancement programme at Limkokwing University on 8 Apr.

Thirty eight students received the Certificate of Achievement after concluding the two-week programme that prepare students for overseas study and career advancement. 

KIGS is the first tertiary level institution to be accredited by the Brunei Government through Brunei Darussalam National Accreditation Council (BDNAC), Ministry of Education in 2003. The college provides Diploma courses for Brunei Darussalam Technical and Vocational Education Council (BDTVEC) and is the first college in the country to be accredited to run a 3-year full-fledged Degree programmes with Limkokwing University since April 2011.

The programme exposed the students to Limkokwing University’s learning ecosystem and global networking opportunities. It also emphasised the importance of innovation and creativity through personal, organisational and national transformation.

KIGS students participated in various workshops, cultural visits and industry talks by experienced professionals during the two-week programme. Students also learnt to strategise, design, develop new ideas, understand business ethics and develop competitive skills in a globalised environment. 

The programme began on 29 Mar when Bruneian students arrived on campus to experience cultural diversity and creative approach through interaction with the University’s international students.

For Muhammad Samhan Bin Azamain, he grew up in a monoculture environment with little experience with another culture from his home country.

“In Brunei, we only interacted with Bruneians,” he explained. “But the unity of the culture at Limkokwing University enable us to learn other cultures from other countries.”

“Students here come a multicultural background and this gives me the opportunity to learn other cultures.”

He also said he was very impressed by campus’s nationalities and cultural diversity which offers multiculturalism experience in one location.

“I can learn more about new cultures by interacting with other international students,” he added. 

Bruneian student Dayangku Amal Nadiah bt Dr Pg Hj Mohamed said she enjoyed University’s educational approach that encourage students to cultivate their creativity. 

“We got to see a lot of student’s projects which are really eye-opening to see how much students can achieve when they work together,” she said. 

“I also love seeing how students contribute to the economy by repackaging goods for Small Medium Enterprises (SMEs),” she said. “It is nice to see that students have direct impact to the economy.”

Limkokwing University emphasises industry exposure for students as part of the University’s multicultural learning programme. This nurtures networking opportunities across various nationalities while providing practical experience for future graduates.

ProjectLiber8 and Limkokwing University take a stand against Human Trafficking

An estimated 20.9 million men, women and children are living as victims of human trafficking globally, with more than half of them in Asia Pacific; ProjectLiber8 and Limkokwing University students collaborated to build awareness about the issue on April 14th at Publika.

ProjectLiber8 is a youth-centric non-governmental organisation formed in 2012 aimed at raising awareness on human trafficking. It organises and executes events that cater to current youth trends and issues to effectively disseminate facts and raise awareness.

Limkokwing students from across faculties were tasked to create a video to address various issues about human trafficking. Titled ‘Modern Day Slavery: What the world doesn’t know,’ the video was made up of students from around the world who shared their knowledge on the issue of human trafficking.

Founder of ProjectLiber8, New Su Shern said she hopes the organisation would gain the attachment of the public to act together on the issue.

“This year we would like to take greater heights by empowering hundreds and thousands of youth to take action against human trafficking,” she concluded.

On how students can benefit on taking part in such events, Akash Shrestha, studying Bachelor of Business Administration said, “Human Trafficking is not going away anytime soon so it is important for students to participate in events like these to raise their information level.”

Ali Daoudi, a semester 2 Bachelor of Business (Hons) in Marketing student acknowledged that taking part in events like these enhances students’ career prospects in chorus to shaping their social responsibility.

“The world would be a better place if everybody did their part in raising awareness of such matters,” he concluded.

Previously, Limkokwing University partnered with Mattel on a campaign to curb bullying where over 250 students competed to design the most creative and impactful anti-bullying message in one of four formats; song, video, poster or photograph and T-shirt design.

Chosun University’s Winter Camp at Limkokwing University

Eighteen South Korean Students from Chosun University concluded a 4-week English Winter Camp programme at Limkokwing University on 29 Jan.

During the programme, students were exposed to local cultures at iconic locations such as Malacca, Kota Kinabalu and Langkawi. They learnt to hone their English proficiency and communication skills by sharing experiences through group discussions, presentations and class activities.

“The best part about this whole experience is that I was able to meet people from all over the world,” said 27-year old Lee Na-Ri. “Malaysia has very relaxed atmosphere and this made it easier for me to make new friends while learning a new language.” 

For 19-year old student Choi Hwa-Won, Malaysia’s tolerance and respect for diversity has left an impression on her especially in regards to the country’s approachable hospitality.

“Everyone here is very accepting of each other regardless of their race,” she said. “Malaysia has a diverse culture with a friendly atmosphere.”

“My best experience here was being able to see different culture living together as a single community,” she said while adding that exposure made English easier to learn and communicate.

The English Winter Camp programme is an immersive English language course that provides lessons which focuses on student participation to achieve fluency, accuracy and confidence. Classes are interactive with activities that focus on speaking, pronunciation, listening, grammar, vocabulary, reading and writing.

Empowering ASEAN Youth & Students

Limkokwing University Global Campus organised the ASEAN UK Business Forum (AUBF) in association with Generation Corporate (GenCorporate) in London, United Kingdom to discuss the empowerment of ASEAN youths on Jan 27.

The “Empowerment of the ASEAN Youths & Student” is part of an annual international gathering that aims to promote pro-active engagement against socioeconomic and global issues to youths in the ASEAN community. The issues covered are community development, trade & commerce, science & education, diplomacy, labour & employment, culture & society as well as youth welfare. 

In attendance were representatives from the ASEAN diplomatic corps in London including High Commissioner of Brunei Dato’ Haji Aminuddin; High Commissioner of Malaysia Dato Ahmad Rasidi Hazizi; Ambassador of the Republic of Indonesia T.M Hamzah Thayeb; Embassy of the Republic of Myanmar Deputy Chief of Mission/Counsellor Kyaw Htin Lin; Royal Thai Embassy Counsellor Porpot Changywa and Global Campus students and staff.

During the discussion, AUBF President Dato S.K Lingam stated that youth is ASEAN’s greatest assets with 60% of the population under 35 years old. This presents opportunities for ASEAN youths to engage new challenges while maintaining a global mind-set and a vision for developing countries.

“It is up to 360 million ASEAN youths to build the future through cooperation, consensus and consultation among various nations,” he concluded.

Limkokwing University is committed to youth empowerment through industry exposure and multiculturalism. Students gain valuable knowledge and experience while studying at the Global Campus in London, United Kingdom. 

“The University is great in doing what it is doing now,” said Khanh Minh Ho from the ASEAN UK Business Forum (AUBF). “Particularly its real-life learning approach as well as business visits instead of just lectures and course books.”

Head of Digital & Business Development from UK Trade & Investment (UKTI) & UK-ASEAN Business Council (UKABC) Max Coleman also added that London is a unique creative hub with a global multicultural city with new ideas for start-up business to multinationals.

“It is important for the University to involve itself with start-ups and corporates,” he said. “Accessing start-ups and communities is as important as corporates to bring knowledge to ASEAN countries.”

Previously, the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) Blueprint 2015 was outlined in 31 Dec 2015 that aims to work towards economic and social integration, free flow of skilled labour and removal of trade barriers in ASEAN countries. Other issues that would be added in the future include 76 million people living in poverty, high infant mortality rate, inaccessible clean drinking water, maritime and territorial issues, endemic corruption, income disparities, languages issues and talent drain.

Founder and President of Limkokwing University receives Utusan’s Lifetime Achievement Award

Founder and President of Limkokwing University, Tan Sri Dato’ Sri Paduka Dr Lim Kok Wing was honoured with a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Utusan Business Awards 2015 ceremony on 1 March 2016.

Utusan Business Awards 2015 was organised by Kumpulan Utusan media group, and recognised existing Malaysian business enterprises for their contributions to the Malaysian economy.  The recipients of the award were chosen based on their excellence and exceptional performances across many sectors of the industries. The award not only recognises business with which perform well with healthy bottom line but also those who clearly anticipate the future need of society in the economic sector they operate in.

His Royal Highness Sultan of Perak, Sultan Nazrin Shah, graced the award ceremony, and presented the recipients with their trophy.  Also present at the ceremony were Deputy Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

For over 40 years, Tan Sri Lim Kok Wing has been receiving numerous awards for his pioneering efforts in education and global initiatives. For Tan Sri Lim, philanthropy goes beyond dollars to make sense. Tan Sri Lim redefines philanthropy to embrace a wider perspective; he includes the future of youths, welfare of the nation and the unity of the people as important milestones to achieve.

Among the issues that Tan Sri Lim has championed included the removal of nuclear weapons, the abolition of apartheid, and the prevention of war. For Tan Sri Lim, education is the answer to bridge the knowledge gap, and to enable the youths of today to bring about the changes necessary for a better future. Tan Sri Lim believes that education is the most effective way to eradicate poverty quickly because it empowers people.

It was with this idea in mind that Tan Sri Lim Kok Wing founded his university, Limkokwing University of Creative Technology. Tan Sri Lim has designed the University to be a bridge between the developed and developing world. Limkokwing University has established its presence on three continents and has worked together with the governments of various nations to establish special training centres and programmes to enable poor and deprived societies to have access to education and learning to build up their capabilities and economic lives.
