Mrs. Yogeswari Veerakathy was bestowed with an award for exemplary commitment for her outstanding dedication, support and mentoring role to the Limkokwing Deaf Community on 22 July 2017.

For ten years Mrs. Yogeswari Veerakathy has been working as an English lecturer and tutor for deaf students. She is not only dedicated to teaching but also liaises with government officials for students’ allowances, scholarships, loans as well as academic counselling for new students. Often she acts as a mediator between parents and deaf students. “I also translate speech to text in class and during counselling sessions with our clinical counsellor as well as when they meet our campus doctor.”

Mrs. Veerakathy works tirelessly to ensure her students acquire unmatched skills in their field of study and are able to communicate independently.

“It’s so important for the deaf community to be able to read and write during job interviews, communicate with colleagues and when given instructions by their bosses. Bosses want to know how well we can comprehend their instructions and how well we can communicate via writing during job interviews as they are not willing to hire sign language interpreters. Today we have apps and software that can convert speech to text so not being able to hear speech shouldn’t be used as an excuse anymore.”

Shedding light to challenges faced by the deaf community Mrs. Veerakathy mentioned that deaf students have been struggling for years in terms of getting the right education and jobs, however, she declared that parents often see Limkokwing University as light at the end of the tunnel.
“They have always expressed their gratitude to Founder and President Tan Sri Dato’ Sri Paduka Dr. Lim Kok Wing. It’s because of him that we have hope for a better life. He cares for us and provides us with a conducive environment for efficient learning. We have heard of God helping those in need through certain people, but this is the first time we see his help through Tan Sri Lim Kok Wing.”

Mrs. Veerakathy’s caring demeanor and ambitious attitude made her a tremendous asset to the Limkokwing University Deaf Community. Upon receiving the President’s Award for Exemplary Commitment she expressed her delight and thanked Tan Sri Lim Kok Wing for such an honour.

“It was a pleasant surprise when Tan Sri told me about it himself, and I feel touched and valued. I feel honoured to be bestowed with this award by the President of this University. I still can’t believe that I went up the stage to receive this award from the Sultanah and Tan Sri. It was like a dream.”

Over 150 deaf students have graduated since 1995 and Mrs. Veerakathy mentioned she was proud that there are more white collar deaf employees compared to years ago.

Limkokwing University is the only higher learning institution in Malaysia that has open doors for the deaf community to pursue further education as well as provide them with much needed facilities.

Adion’s first visit to Malaysia in December 2016 led her to discover Limkokwing University where she kick-started her career in Hair Design.

“I have always been interested in doing hair design and make-up. I couldn’t have chosen a better university, because Limkokwing is renowned for its unconventional learning approach.”

Limitless Creativity

Adion said that in hair design, one has to constantly come up with creative ideas. “When you work as a hair designer, you will always have some clients who would want to see you, but have a set style in mind.”

“But there are also clients who would want you to do what is best for them, based on their lifestyle and face shape. This is where you can really let your creativity flow and help a client get the look that is going to work best for them.”

Industry-Led Diploma

For Adion, Limkokwing University shapes and trains students by incorporating industry practices with experience.

“Even though I am currently doing my theory in hair design, I take part in a lot of events where I get to practice what I learn in the classroom. For example, every Thursdays I get to do hairstyling for the weekly fashion show.”

She believes that this expands her skills even further because each week requires different hairstyles.

“Studying here not only improves my hair designing skills but also my communication skills. I get to communicate with students from all over the world and learn about various cultures.”

High World of Fashion

“Hair design is entwined to the fashion industry, so the opportunities in this career are endless. With the skills that I have learned in Limkokwing University, I am confident that after I graduate I will be able to successfully run my own hair salon.”

Pakistan was the first region in South Asia to embrace Islam and has developed a distinctive Islamic identity. The culture and society of Pakistan comprises of various ethnic groups within its own borders as well as surrounding regions.

Custom Mix

Pakistani culture is a mix of modern and traditional values with four distinctive periods, namely pre-Islamic, Islamic, Colonial and Post-Colonial.

At the same time, western urban culture has a great influence on Pakistani youth. It is not uncommon to see young people wearing traditional clothing mixed with western dress styles.

Pakistanis tend to favour a mix of direct and indirect forms of communication. However, when speaking to someone who is older, an indirect communication style is preferred.

A direct “No” can be seen as rather offensive. It is best to respond with a “I will try” or “Inshaallah”.

Dress Code

Men and women tend to dress conservatively. In a business environment, men are recommended to wear dark suits and comfortable shoes. Women should avoid tight fitting clothes, short skirts, or sleeveless attire.

However, during hotter seasons, informal dress code is more acceptable.

Students from Limkokwing University competed in the prestigious AirAsia Runway Ready Designer Search 2017 Grand Finale at Pavilion Kuala Lumpur on 18 August 2017.

This year’s finale included twenty aspiring designers from ten Asean countries – Malaysia, Singapore, Philippines, Vietnam, Thailand, Cambodia, Indonesia, Myanmar, Laos and Brunei – who showcased their creations on the runway. They were judged according to the design creativity, originality, consistency of their collection as well as adherence to the Asean theme.

The Founder of Kuala Lumpur Fashion Week, Andrew Tan said this year’s AirAsia Runway Ready Designer Search was amazing, because it included ten Asean countries. It provided a vast opportunity to be on the lookout for new talent and give them a platform to build their fashion brand.

“Both graduates and students must take advantage of such, so that when opportunities like this come, they would link up to the KL Fashion Week. Whether or not they win they must not give up on their journey and continue to finesse their skills through such competitions,” he added.

Aireen Omar, Chief Executive Officer of AirAsia said, “We have seen amazing talent today, and pleased to give twenty designers from ten Asean countries showcase their talents and the necessary exposure to start off their own career in this industry.”

“Three of the finalists came from Limkokwing University, which is great because the University gives them a platform not only to be as creative as ever but also for them to learn the business sense of things that will make it economically viable for them to sell a creation,” she concluded.

Finalist Phynix Tan Pek Han studying Diploma in Fashion and Retail Design, Limkokwing Cyberjaya mentioned that he was happy to take part in a competition with designers from all over Asia.

“It is my first time to join a competition and I’m happy to have made it to the top twenty of promising designers. All the contestants are so talented and this goes on to show my potential. Choosing to study fashion at Limkokwing University was surely the best decision I could ever make, because it teaches what’s relevant in the industry.”
